PM Modi Approves Northern Corridor Bullet Train: Delhi to Guwahati

In a massive boost to India's high-speed rail infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially approved the Northern Corridor Bullet Train network. This ambitious project is set to link major metropolitan hubs including Delhi, Varanasi, Patna, and Guwahati, fundamentally changing how passengers travel across North and Northeast India.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development on Saturday, October 31, 2026. This new corridor represents a significant expansion of the nation's high-speed rail roadmap, following the progress of the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project.

Transforming Connectivity Across North India

The proposed high-speed corridor is designed to provide transformative connectivity, drastically slashing travel times between major cities. The Delhi-Varanasi-Siliguri stretch is expected to be the longest in the entire network. Officials noted that the project could reduce the current travel time between Delhi and Siliguri from approximately 20 hours to just 6 hours.

This initiative is aimed at serving a wide demographic, including business entrepreneurs, the youth, and the middle class, providing infrastructure that is expected to serve the country for several decades.

Estimated Travel Times via the New Corridor

The efficiency of the Northern Corridor Bullet Train is highlighted by the projected journey durations between key cities:

  • Delhi to Agra: 59 minutes
  • Delhi to Kanpur: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Delhi to Lucknow: 2 hours 12 minutes
  • Varanasi to Prayagraj: 33 minutes
  • Varanasi to Patna: 1 hour
  • Varanasi to Lucknow: 1 hour 21 minutes
  • Varanasi to Agra: 2 hours 34 minutes
  • Varanasi to Delhi: 3 hours 33 minutes

Project Status and Rail Modernization

While the approval marks a major milestone, the Railway Board is currently in the process of updating the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which was originally prepared by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited. The government has emphasized that final route alignments, total costs, and specific project timelines will be solidified following comprehensive feasibility studies.

The announcement of the corridor coincided with another major milestone in rail modernization: the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express service between Varanasi and New Delhi. Minister Vaishnaw cited this launch as part of a broader, integrated strategy to modernize the Indian Railways network.
