Northern Railway to Monetize Station Display Boards via Ads
Northern Railway will use station train information boards for commercial advertising to boost non-fare revenue across multiple divisions.

In a strategic move to boost its earnings, the Northern Railway administration has announced a new initiative to implement a non-fare revenue (NFR) model. The plan involves utilizing train information display boards located at various railway stations for commercial advertising.
Offsetting Maintenance Costs through Advertising
Currently, the railway bears significant operational expenses related to the installation and regular maintenance of these essential information boards. By transitioning to this new model, the administration aims to create a sustainable stream of additional income. This revenue will help offset the costs associated with maintaining passenger amenities while modernizing station infrastructure.
Implementation Across Key Divisions
The Railway Headquarters at Baroda House has already issued formal directives to senior divisional commercial managers to kickstart this process. The initiative will be rolled out across several key divisions, including:
- Ambala
- Delhi
- Lucknow
- Moradabad
- Firozpur
- Jammu Tawi
These officials have been tasked with conducting a thorough assessment of the existing display boards. Furthermore, they must evaluate future infrastructure requirements and submit a comprehensive implementation plan to the central administration to ensure a smooth transition to this advertising-based model.
Official Confirmation
Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, confirmed that the directives have been formally issued to the respective divisions. This development marks a significant step in the railway's ongoing efforts to diversify its revenue streams and modernize station facilities through innovative commercial strategies.
