Indian Railways has introduced a significant shift in its reservation policy that affects how millions of passengers plan their journeys. While the general public will now face a much shorter window to secure tickets, a special privilege remains intact for international visitors and the Indian diaspora.

The New 60-Day Reservation Rule

Effective from November 1, 2024, the Ministry of Railways has officially reduced the general Advance Reservation Period (ARP). Previously, passengers could book their train journeys up to 120 days in advance; however, this window has now been slashed to just 60 days. This change is aimed at streamlining the reservation process for the majority of domestic travelers.

Special Privilege for NRIs and International Visitors

Despite the reduction for the general public, there is a massive exception that allows for much longer-term planning. Under the Foreign Tourist Quota (FTQ), Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign tourists holding valid passports can still book their train travel up to 365 days in advance.

This extended booking window was originally introduced on July 14, 2017, to assist international travelers in coordinating their complex itineraries across the country. It ensures that those visiting India from abroad can secure their preferred travel dates well before their arrival.

How the 365-Day Booking Process Works

While the ability to book a year in advance provides immense flexibility, there are specific procedural details that passengers should keep in mind:

  • Berth Allocation: Even though a ticket can be booked 365 days out, the actual allocation of berths is finalized only when the general Advance Reservation Period opens.
  • Notifications: Once the berths are allocated, passengers will receive official updates regarding their seat or berth status via SMS.
  • Payment Methods: To make international travel seamless, the official IRCTC e-ticketing website supports payments via international debit and credit cards.

Modernization and Exceptions

As part of a broader effort to enhance the passenger experience, the Ministry of Railways is working on several digital upgrades. These include a planned revamp of the IRCTC website and improved authentication processes for Aadhaar-linked users.

However, travelers should note that not all trains follow these standard rules. Certain daytime express services, such as the Taj Express and Gomti Express, continue to operate under their own pre-existing, shorter reservation timelines. Always check the specific schedule for your chosen train to avoid any booking surprises.
