PDDU Railway Division equips 150 electric locomotives with indigenous Kavach system

The Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Rail Division achieved a major milestone in railway safety by equipping 150 electric locomotives with the indigenous Kavach system. This development marks a significant step forward in modernizing the national rail infrastructure through advanced automated safety measures. Passengers and rail enthusiasts can now look forward to enhanced security and operational efficiency across the division. The milestone was successfully reached on September 17, 2026, coinciding with Vishwakarma Puja at the P.D.D.U. Railway Electric Loco Shed. Divisional Railway Manager Uday Singh Meena credited the engineering department for their dedicated efforts in achieving this target. The implementation of Kavach provides crucial technical support to loco pilots to ensure safer travel for passengers.

How the Kavach System Works

The Kavach technology serves as an advanced Automatic Train Protection system designed to prevent accidents on busy routes. The system continuously monitors a train speed and position in real time. It provides timely warnings and automatically initiates braking to prevent signal passing at danger, known as SPAD. Kavach also prevents over-speeding and potential collisions under diverse operating conditions.

National Safety Standards and Future Goals

Holding a prestigious Safety Integrity Level certification of SIL-4, Kavach stands as a cornerstone for high reliability in train operations. The steady progress made by the P.D.D.U. division directly aligns with broader institutional targets to expand the Kavach network across the entire Indian railway grid. By ensuring strict adherence to signals and prescribed speed limits, this rollout reinforces the commitment of Indian Railways to passenger safety and infrastructural modernization.
