Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly strengthened the rail infrastructure of Tamil Nadu by inaugurating and dedicating a series of major projects worth over ₹750 crore. During his visit to Chennai on October 11, 2026, the Prime Minister commissioned several initiatives aimed at modernizing stations, expanding connectivity, and improving passenger safety across the state.

Amrit Bharat Station Transformation

As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, five key railway stations are undergoing massive redevelopments with a collective investment exceeding ₹70 crore. These upgrades are designed to provide world-class facilities to commuters. The redeveloped stations include:

  • Palani: Receiving a major boost with an investment of ₹20 crore.
  • Ambasamudram: Allocated ₹13 crore for modernization.
  • Vellore Cantonment: Upgraded with approximately ₹8 crore to ₹8.6 crore.
  • Paramakkudi
  • Namakkal

The modernization efforts at these stations feature improved entrances, solar energy facilities, and enhanced passenger information systems. To ensure inclusivity, the projects also include new foot overbridges, lifts, and improved accessibility features specifically for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities).

New Connectivity: The Karaikal-Peralam Line

A major highlight of the inauguration is the 23-km long Karaikal-Peralam railway line. Constructed at a cost exceeding ₹550 crore, this new line is set to bolster regional connectivity by providing a direct link to the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur corridor. This strategic addition is expected to significantly facilitate the movement of essential freight, including coal and food grains, to the Karaikal Port.

Enhancing Safety with Coimbatore Flyovers

To address road safety and reduce traffic congestion at busy level crossings, the Prime Minister also opened three new rail flyovers in the Coimbatore region. Representing an investment of over ₹120 crore, these flyovers are designed to ensure smoother movement for both rail and road traffic, minimizing delays and potential accidents at intersections.
