Prime Minister Modi Unveils Major Railway Projects Worth Over Rs 35000 Crore to Boost Regional Connectivity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a massive series of railway infrastructure projects exceeding Rs 35,000 crore in Vadodara, Gujarat, on September 8, 2026. These landmark developments are set to transform travel, trade, and logistics across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh, bringing modern connectivity to underserved regions.
The centerpiece of these inaugurations was the newly constructed Jobat-Tanda Road section of the Chhota Udaipur-Dhar rail project, which officially provides Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district with its first direct rail connection to Gujarat. Central State Minister and Dhar MP Savitri Thakur flagged off the new MEMU passenger train service, a move expected to significantly support tourism, education, and market access for the tribal regions of Vadodara, Chhota Udaipur, and Alirajpur.
Expansion on the Delhi-Mumbai Corridor
Building on these passenger amenities, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone on September 7, 2026, for the construction of third and fourth railway lines between Vadodara and Ratlam. This massive 259-kilometer project is valued at approximately Rs 8,885 crore and is scheduled for completion within three years. To ensure smoother traffic flow on the crucial Delhi-Mumbai corridor, the engineering marvel will feature 57 major bridges, 216 minor bridges, four tunnels, and five viaducts. According to the Ministry of Railways, this expansion is part of a broader masterplan designed to increase train frequency and significantly reduce passenger travel times.
Advancing the Dedicated Freight Corridor
In addition to passenger and passenger-line enhancements, the infrastructure push included the dedication of three vital sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Spanning 326 kilometers at a cost exceeding Rs 20,700 crore, these new sections comprise Sanand (North)-Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Safale, and New Safale-JNPT. These freight pathways are explicitly engineered to accelerate logistics and drastically reduce overall transportation costs.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that these multi-tracking initiatives will directly benefit approximately 85.84 lakh people across 3,633 villages in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh. Furthermore, the freight enhancements target an impressive annual reduction in logistics costs of Rs 856 crore while substantially lowering national carbon dioxide emissions, making Indian Railways cleaner, faster, and more efficient.
