Pollachi Junction receives its first automobile freight rake carrying Maruti Suzuki cars

Pollachi Junction under the Palakkats Railway Division achieved a major freight milestone by successfully handling its first-ever New Modified Goods rake carrying automobiles on August 24 2026. This historic arrival highlights the station's expanding logistics capabilities beyond traditional agricultural goods. Here are the key details of this landmark freight operation:The shipment brought 120 Maruti Suzuki cars originating from Manesar Haryana.The 25-wagon rake loaded on August 18 arrived at Pollachi Junction at 5:45 PM and was positioned for unloading by 5:55 PM.The total freight charge for this 120-car load was approximately Rs 30 lakh while a larger 260-car load will cost around Rs 45 lakh.Authorities arranged 18 vehicle trailers with each carrying about seven cars for onward distribution.

Diversification of Freight Operations

Traditionally known for handling agricultural freight such as maize wheat and rice Pollachi Junction has now stepped into the automotive logistics sector. Railway officials highlighted that transporting bulk vehicles via rail is significantly faster and more cost-effective compared to traditional road transport. This transition helps manufacturers streamline their supply chains while reducing highway congestion and carbon emissions.

Seamless Distribution Network

The vehicles unloaded at Pollachi are destined for showrooms across Kerala Coimbatore Madurai and the local Pollachi market. To ensure smooth onward transit the cars are first transported to Irugur near Coimbatore before their final dispatch to respective dealerships.
