Prayagraj Junction: New Swachhta Mitras to Clean Trains On-Board
Prayagraj Junction introduces Swachhta Mitras to collect garbage from passengers inside trains, enhancing hygiene via mobile dustbins.

Prayagraj Junction is stepping up its hygiene game to ensure a cleaner travel experience for passengers. In a significant move to enhance sanitation, Indian Railways has deployed 'Swachhta Mitras' (cleanliness friends) who will now collect garbage directly from passengers within train coaches.
A Mobile Approach to On-Board Hygiene
This initiative is designed to tackle waste management at the source. Moving away from passive cleaning methods, the program utilizes a newly implemented coach-to-coach mobile dustbin system. Launched in accordance with recent guidelines from the Railway General Manager, this system allows for the efficient segregation and disposal of waste right from the passenger compartments.
The deployment ensures that waste is not just left in bins but is actively managed and moved through the train to prevent accumulation. This follows strict directives from the Railway Board, which mandate that both On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS) and pantry car staff must effectively manage and seal all waste for proper disposal at designated stations.
Part of the Swachhta Pakhwada-2026 Campaign
The introduction of Swachhta Mitras is a core component of the ongoing 'Swachhta Pakhwada-2026' (Cleanliness Fortnight) activities. Throughout October 2026, these dedicated workers have been central to maintaining the cleanliness of both trains and station premises.
Recent intensive cleaning activities conducted by the team include:
- October 11: Thorough cleaning of information and direction boards at Prayagraj Junction.
- October 8: Intensive track cleaning operations carried out at Prayagraj Chhivki station.
- October 7: Removal of scrap materials and bushes from the tracks at Prayagraj Junction to ensure safety and cleanliness.
