Prayagraj Track Safety: GPS Tracking & Winter Protocols Introduced
Indian Railways is implementing a rigorous safety overhaul in the Prayagraj region to prepare for the upcoming winter season. To mitigate the risk of rail fractures caused by extreme cold, the Railway Board has mandated enhanced track monitoring and real-time surveillance protocols to ensure safe operations during the freezing months.
High-Tech Monitoring via GPS and Thermal Sensors
To ensure constant vigilance, patrolmen will now be equipped with GPS trackers. This technology allows authorities to monitor their movements in real-time, ensuring that track inspections are conducted thoroughly and according to schedule. Additionally, the use of Continuous Rail Thermometers (CRT) has become mandatory. These devices must be kept in operational condition to provide real-time temperature updates, allowing the department to detect potential hazards before they lead to accidents.
Strict Guidelines for Patrolmen and Field Staff
The Railway Board has issued specific directives regarding the technology used for monitoring staff. Following recent orders, there is a strict prohibition on using private mobile phones or third-party applications to track keymen and patrolmen. Only official, railway-provided devices are authorized for this purpose.
To support the staff on the ground, K.R. Chaudhary, Executive Director of Civil Engineering (Planning) for the Railway Board, has noted that only experienced personnel will be assigned to these critical patrolling duties. These workers will be provided with:
- Thermal clothing to withstand extreme cold.
- Essential safety kits for field operations.
Shift to RDSO for Critical Safety Inspections
In a significant policy shift, the responsibility for inspecting critical safety components is changing. Quality checks for vital components, including brakes, wheels, springs, and couplings, will no longer be handled by private agencies. Instead, these essential inspections will be transferred to experts at the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to ensure the highest levels of safety and precision.
Winter Fog Alert: Potential Train Disruptions
Passengers should also prepare for potential changes in travel schedules. The North Central Railway (NCR) has announced plans that may include the cancellation or reduced frequency of various trains between December 2026 and February 2027. These adjustments are being made in anticipation of dense fog conditions that typically affect visibility and safety during the winter months.
