Rail Ministry Advances Four Lining Project for Seven Key High Density Corridors

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the Ministry of Railways is undertaking a massive project to 4-line seven high-density railway corridors across India. The initiative, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focuses on the Golden Quadrilateral and its diagonals, covering routes connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Guwahati. Specifically, the corridors being upgraded include Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Chennai, Chennai-Kolkata, Kolkata-Delhi, as well as the diagonal links of Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Kolkata, and Delhi-Guwahati.

These seven routes constitute approximately 16% of the national rail network but facilitate nearly 41% of India's total railway traffic. The project aims to convert roughly 11,000 kilometers of high-density network into four-track lines to enhance capacity, accommodate rising passenger and freight demand, reduce logistics costs, and improve environmental sustainability.

Current Status and Recent Developments

The project status is currently varied, with some segments already completed or possessing 4-line infrastructure, while others are either under construction, approved, or currently in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage. On September 7, 2026, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several railway works in Gujarat, including the 4-lining of the Ratlam-Vadodara section, a critical component of this broader expansion. Additionally, developments regarding the Delhi-Guwahati route were specifically highlighted on August 28, 2026.

On September 8, 2026, the Ministry of Railways shared a video statement from Minister Vaishnaw via its official social media channels to reiterate the government's commitment to these seven strategic corridors.
