Union Cabinet approves rail projects worth Rs 4254 crore for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh

The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has officially sanctioned two major multi-tracking rail projects for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh with a combined estimated cost of Rs 4,254 crore. These crucial infrastructure developments span a total length of 288 kilometers and are designed to significantly enhance rail connectivity along the Shahdol-Bilaspur and Katni routes.

The approved multi-tracking initiative includes the construction of a fourth line between Katni and Pendra Road, alongside a third line between Bilaspur (Uslapur) and Pendra Road. These vital routes fall under the jurisdiction of the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone. The projects are strategically aimed at resolving long-standing issues regarding chronic train delays and heavy operational congestion on this busy network.

Boosting Connectivity and Tourism

The rail expansion is officially expected to be completed by the 2029-30 fiscal year. Once finished, these projects will dramatically improve passenger connectivity between Shahdol, Anuppur, Bilaspur, and Durg. Railway authorities anticipate that these capacity improvements will facilitate the introduction of brand new train services for commuters and provide much easier access to major tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh, including Bandhavgarh and Amarkantak.

Economic Growth and Freight Operations

Beyond passenger convenience, the massive infrastructure expansion is intended to give a major boost to industrial and commercial activity by streamlining freight transportation across the region. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his gratitude to the central leadership, noting that the upgrade is vital for regional development. In addition to increasing the overall capacity of the network, the projects will generate new employment opportunities and successfully alleviate the pressure of heavy goods train traffic.
