Railway safety boost: RailSense device to prevent train fires caused by extreme heat

Indian Railways is focusing on mobile feedback alert systems to protect trains from fires during extreme summer heat. A new device called ‘RailSense’ has been developed to monitor wheel temperature and alert drivers before accidents happen. This technology aims to reduce loss of life and damage to railway property.

How does the RailSense device work?

Students from Government Engineering College, Ambedkar Nagar developed this device with financial support from IIIT Prayagraj. The system consists of two parts: sensors installed on every wheel and a display unit in the engine for the driver. It uses a color-coded alert system to show temperature levels:

Join Channel
  • Green Light: Normal temperature
  • Blue Light: Temperature higher than normal
  • Red Light: Temperature exceeds 80 degrees Celsius

What are the benefits of this technology?

The device provides precise information if a wheel gets jammed or brakes stick. This allows the driver to control the train speed or stop it immediately before a fire starts. North Eastern Railway has already requested trials for this system to enhance passenger safety during heatwaves.

Recent fire incidents and safety updates

The need for such systems comes after recent events. On May 18, 2026, a passenger train from Sasaram to Patna caught fire in a coach due to a suspected short circuit. Earlier, on May 17, 2026, the fire safety system of a Rajdhani Express coach was activated, leading to automatic braking. Northern Railway has started a safety audit following this incident.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
