Indian Railways Charging Point Rule: 11 PM to 5 AM Shutdown
Indian Railways mandates turning off coach charging points from 11 PM to 5 AM to prevent fire risks and battery explosions.

The Indian Railway Board has issued a formal directive regarding the Indian Railways charging point rule, mandating the strict enforcement of switching off mobile charging points in train coaches between 11 PM and 5 AM. This safety measure, detailed in a letter dated October 26, 2026, aims to mitigate fire risks caused by overheating batteries and short circuits during overnight travel.
Preventing Fire Risks and Explosions
The current emphasis on enforcement follows a recent safety scare involving a power bank explosion on the Mumbai-Howrah Mail near Bandamunda, Odisha. Investigations into the incident revealed that the charging points in the affected coach had remained active, which was contrary to existing safety protocols.
By enforcing this mandatory six-hour blackout, the Railway Board intends to address several critical safety concerns, including:
- The risk of battery overheating during long charging periods.
- Potential short circuits within the coach electrical systems.
- Fire hazards stemming from faulty or exploding external power banks.
A Reinforcement of Existing Safety Protocols
While this directive is being strictly enforced now, it is not a new implementation. The policy was originally introduced on June 19, 2014, following a fire incident aboard the Bengaluru-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express. The mandate was later reiterated in March 2021 to ensure consistent safety standards across all zones.
Strict Enforcement and Inspections
To ensure full compliance with the directive, the Railway Board has instructed zonal authorities to take decisive action. This includes:
- Conducting surprise inspections to monitor charging point usage.
- Prioritizing the training and counseling of on-board staff regarding the rule.
- Ensuring there are absolutely no relaxations to this mandatory shutdown.
Officials have emphasized that any negligence in enforcing this six-hour blackout will not be tolerated.
Essential Advice for Passengers
To avoid any inconvenience during your journey, passengers are advised to fully charge their electronic devices prior to their travel. For your safety, please keep the following in mind:
If a device begins to emit smoke, produces a burning odor, or becomes unusually hot while charging, cease use immediately and alert the train staff.
