Diwali Gift: 78-Day Bonus for 11.40 Lakh Railway Staff

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved a 78-day productivity-linked bonus (PLB) for railway employees. This festive incentive, announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is set to benefit approximately 11.40 lakh non-gazetted railway personnel across the country.

Who are the beneficiaries?

The bonus is designed to recognize the contribution of the workforce to railway efficiency. The payout will reach a wide array of Group C staff members, including:

  • Station Masters and Supervisors
  • Track Maintainers and Pointsmen
  • Technicians and Technician Helpers

Payout Details and Financial Impact

While the bonus is equivalent to 78 days of wages, the government has implemented a ceiling on the amount an individual can receive. The maximum payout per employee is capped at ₹17,951.

The total financial outlay for this massive disbursement is estimated to be between ₹1,865.68 crore and ₹2,009.61 crore. Historically, this productivity-linked bonus is distributed annually ahead of major festivals such as Durga Puja, Dussehra, or Diwali.

The Wage Ceiling Controversy

Despite the festive announcement, the method used to calculate the bonus remains a subject of debate. The current calculation is based on a maximum monthly wage limit of ₹7,000, a threshold that has not been updated since the 2014-15 financial year.

Railway employee unions have expressed ongoing dissatisfaction with this cap, calling for it to be increased to ₹18,000. Workers' representatives have pointed out that if the wage ceiling were adjusted to their requested level, individual bonus payouts could exceed ₹46,000.
