Indian Railways Activates War Room to Manage Festive Surge
Indian Railways activates war rooms and AI surveillance to manage the massive passenger surge during Diwali and Chhath festivals.

To combat the massive influx of travelers during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals, Indian Railways has launched an intensive crowd management strategy. Authorities have activated a centralized 'war room' and specialized RPF control rooms to monitor real-time CCTV feeds across major stations 24/7, ensuring a safer journey for the festive passenger surge.
Massive Spike in Passenger Footfall
The scale of travel during this period is unprecedented. Northern Railway reports that daily passenger footfall in the Delhi/NCR region has climbed from approximately 8 lakh to between 10 and 11 lakh. To address this demand, the railway administration is significantly increasing its capacity.
Enhanced Train Services and Capacity
To ensure commuters can reach their destinations, several measures have been taken to bolster the existing network:
- Special Train Operations: Northern Railway is running 6,200 special train trips, which marks a 35% increase over the 4,600 trips provided during the same period last year.
- Additional Coaches: Approximately 25 major regular train services have been augmented with extra coaches to accommodate the higher volume of passengers.
High-Tech Surveillance and AI Security
Safety is being bolstered through advanced technology and a structured command hierarchy. The railway is utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based security systems to maintain order and monitor station environments. This is supported by a three-tier monitoring framework that involves coordination at the Divisional, Zonal, and Railway Board levels.
"The organization is prioritizing confirmed ticketing and a seamless travel experience for passengers," stated Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway.
Rapid Response and Crowd Control Tactics
To prevent station overcrowding and platform congestion, officials are implementing specialized operational protocols:
- Train-on-Demand Protocol: This system allows for additional trains to be dispatched to platforms within a narrow window of 10 to 15 minutes following an announcement.
- Holding Area Model: Major stations are using regulated entry and strict access control via 'holding areas' to manage the flow of people onto platforms effectively.
Strict Safety Prohibitions for Commuters
Railway authorities have issued a stern warning regarding prohibited items. To maintain safety during the festive rush, passengers are strictly forbidden from carrying:
- Firecrackers
- Gas cylinders
- Petrochemicals
- Any explosive materials
Commuters are strongly advised to arrive at stations well in advance. This is to account for the additional time required for new security checks and the segregation measures currently in place at station entry and exit points.
