Railway Infrastructure Delays: New Trains Stalled by Yard & Platform Works

Significant delays in critical railway infrastructure projects are creating a bottleneck across the Indian Railways network. Sluggish progress in yard shifting and stalled platform expansion works are not only affecting station upgrades but are also directly preventing the introduction of new train services.
Vasai Road and Jogeshwari Yard Delays
At the Vasai Road Terminus, Western Railway is managing a massive project valued at approximately ₹150.25 crore. This involves the complex task of shifting the Jogeshwari Goods Yard. While construction is active across 4.5 hectares of land, the project is expected to take much longer, with a target completion date set for March 2028.
The scope of work includes:
- Development of 1.8 route kilometers.
- Development of 5.1 track kilometers.
- Construction of a 1,200-meter platform wall, of which only 500 meters is currently complete.
Redevelopment in Kishanganj-Thakurganj
In the Kishanganj-Thakurganj sector, redevelopment efforts are moving forward, though they remain ongoing. After 18 months of construction, platform expansions and floor renovations are approximately 70% complete. Officials are aiming for a 2027 completion date and plan to enhance station security by installing thirty CCTV cameras at each station.
Operational Disruptions and Route Changes
The ongoing construction is causing significant disruptions for passengers through train cancellations and diversions. In the Gonda-Budhwal section, third-line connectivity work has led to the cancellation of eight trains and the diversion of thirty others as of May 2026. Public Relations Officer Amit Malviya noted that these non-interlocking works are essential to increase line capacity.
Other major disruptions include:
- New Delhi Railway Station: Redevelopment has forced the shifting of 30 trains, including the Shatabdi Express, to alternative stations.
- Ghaziabad and Delhi-Ambala Sections: Technical challenges in the
