₹4,178 Cr Boost: Massive Rail Projects for Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh
In a major move to strengthen regional connectivity, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned massive rail infrastructure projects Tamil Nadu Andhra Pradesh totaling ₹4,178.13 crore. This extensive development plan covers a 236-kilometer network and focuses on critical upgrades such as doubling existing tracks and constructing new third and fourth lines to ease congestion.
These projects were formally communicated by the Railway Board to the General Manager of Southern Railway following a nationwide multi-tracking initiative approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The upgrades are designed to streamline logistics and improve train punctuality across high-density routes.
Expanding the Mumbai-Chennai High-Density Network
A significant portion of this investment is dedicated to the Arakkonam-Renigunta corridor. This 77-kilometer stretch is set to receive ₹1,936.46 crore for the construction of third and fourth lines.
Currently, this vital link in the Mumbai-Chennai High-Density Network is operating at 120% capacity, making upgrades an urgent necessity. Once the project is completed, it is expected to provide several key benefits:
- Increased Freight Capacity: The corridor will be able to handle an additional 7.21 million tonnes of freight annually.
- Industrial Support: The expansion will directly benefit major industrial hubs, including SIDCO Tiruvallur and SIPCOT Ranipet.
- Infrastructure Scale: The construction work will involve the development of 12 major bridges and 221 minor bridges.
Connecting Bengaluru to Southern Districts
The second major component of this investment involves the 159-kilometer Salem-Karur-Dindigul doubling project. With a budget of ₹2,241.67 crore, this initiative aims to create a continuous double-line corridor that connects Bengaluru with southern districts like Madurai and Thoothukudi.
The funding for this specific section has been meticulously allocated to cover all aspects of modern railway operations:
- Civil Works: ₹1,580.33 crore
- Signaling and Telecommunications: ₹281.78 crore
- Electrical Infrastructure: ₹379.56 crore
A Vision for Modern Logistics
These massive infrastructure developments are closely aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and the 'Amrit Chaturbhuj' program. By upgrading these high-traffic routes, the Railways aims to reduce bottlenecks and create a more efficient movement of goods and passengers.
The government has set a target for the full completion of these projects by the 2029-30 fiscal year, promising a transformed railway landscape for the southern region.
