Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mandates strict safety standards and supplier accountability
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw convened a comprehensive safety review meeting at Rail Bhawan on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The high-level meeting was attended by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board, members of the Railway Board, Director Generals, General Managers of Zonal Railways, and Divisional Railway Managers. During this crucial session, the Minister issued strict directives aimed at bolstering rail infrastructure and operational integrity across the network.

Minister Vaishnaw mandated a mission-mode approach to address technical deficiencies in signalling systems and ordered the maintenance and replacement of Overhead Equipment components that have surpassed their prescribed service life.
Strict action will be taken against suppliers providing substandard materials, and those involved in deliberate negligence will be permanently blacklisted.
Focus on Track and Signalling Integrity
To ensure flawless train operations, the Minister emphasized the strict maintenance of track infrastructure. Officials have been specifically instructed to thoroughly inspect point machines, turnouts, and fasteners, while immediately ensuring that all missing fasteners are replaced. Furthermore, a mission-mode approach has been ordered to fix technical deficiencies in signalling systems, alongside the timely maintenance and replacement of Over Head Equipment components that have already surpassed their prescribed service life.
Upgrading Passenger Coach and Rolling Stock Safety
Addressing passenger safety directly, the Minister directed significant improvements in workshop maintenance standards. Special focus is being placed on electrical circuits and fire safety systems within coaches to prevent onboard hazards. Additionally, officials must prioritize the rigorous maintenance of couplers and wheels for both wagons and coaches to guarantee smooth and secure journeys for millions of daily travellers.
Zero Tolerance for Substandard Supplies
Underlining a strict policy of quality control, the Minister announced that stringent action will be taken against suppliers providing substandard materials for Signalling and Telecommunication, Over Head Equipment, track, or rolling stock. In cases of deliberate negligence, authorities are mandated to permanently blacklist the responsible suppliers to protect the integrity of the national transporter.
Festivel Season Preparedness
Looking ahead at upcoming travel rushes, Minister Vaishnaw instructed railway officials to closely coordinate with district and state administrations. This proactive planning is essential to prepare for the upcoming festival season, ensuring advance arrangements at locations prone to sudden surges in passenger crowds and guaranteeing adequate facilities for the general public.
