Railway Minister Unveils Ambitious Plan for High Density Route Expansion
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a comprehensive strategy to modernize India's rail network by quadrupling seven high-density railway routes to reduce congestion and boost speed. These seven key corridors span approximately 11,000 kilometers, representing just 16 percent of the national network while handling 41 percent of total rail traffic. The ambitious infrastructure drive covers crucial routes including Delhi-Howrah, Howrah-Chennai, Chennai-Mumbai, Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Howrah, and Delhi-Guwahati. Along with network expansion, the government is heavily prioritizing domestic manufacturing for modern trainsets like the Vande Bharat series under the Make in India initiative, while accelerating station revamps and freight capacity enhancements across the country.

Targeted Capacity and Freight Enhancements
As part of ongoing strategic upgrades, a 440-crore rupee project was approved on July 23, 2026, to construct a 14.52-kilometer third rail line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur. This specific project is projected to facilitate an additional 3.52 million tonnes of annual freight capacity, easing movement on critical industrial corridors. Furthermore, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that construction on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is proceeding swiftly, aiming for a targeted completion date by the end of 2029.
Focus on Passenger Welfare and Station Modernization
Addressing passenger amenities and social inclusivity, the railway administration is actively scaling up the production of non-AC Amrit Bharat trains specifically designed to support lower-income travellers. Minister Vaishnaw firmly refuted claims regarding any reduction of general coaches, assuring passengers of continued affordability and expanded travel options. With state-of-the-art station modernizations progressing under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme across 1,337 identified locations, Indian Railways is firmly on track to deliver a faster, safer, and more inclusive travel experience for millions of daily commuters.
