Railway Staff Train Upgrade Now Allowed on Vande Bharat
Railway employees and pensioners can now enjoy a railway staff train upgrade on Rajdhani and Vande Bharat by paying the fare difference.

The Railway Board has issued a significant new directive regarding the railway staff train upgrade, making it easier for employees and pensioners to travel in higher classes on premium services. This decision aims to provide more flexibility and comfort to the railway community when traveling on the network's most prestigious routes.
Enhanced Travel for Employees and Pensioners
Under the new guidelines issued on October 30, 2026, railway employees, pensioners, and their eligible family members are permitted to upgrade their travel class on several premium train services. This facility is specifically applicable to high-end trains, including:
- Vande Bharat Express
- Rajdhani Express
- Shatabdi Express
- Duronto Express
To avail of this benefit, holders of various travel documents—including Privilege Passes (PP), Post-Retirement Complimentary Passes (PRCP), and Widow Passes (WP)—can choose to occupy a higher class than their standard entitlement. The only requirement is that the traveler must pay the fare difference between their entitled class and the desired class.
Clarification of Existing Rules
This move is not merely a new benefit but a clarification intended to resolve long-standing ambiguities. The directive is grounded in Rule 3(x) of Schedule-II of the Railway Servants (Pass) Rules, 1986. By formalizing this interpretation, the Railway Board has ensured that there is no confusion regarding travel entitlements on premium services.
The directive was developed in consultation with the Railway Board’s Commercial Directorate and officially supersedes all previous instructions concerning travel entitlements on passes and Privilege Ticket Orders (PTOs).
Technical Implementation via CRIS
To ensure that this railway staff train upgrade is seamless for users, the Railway Board has instructed the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) to implement necessary technical updates. These changes will be integrated into:
- The Passenger Reservation System (PRS)
- The e-Pass module within the Human Resource Management System (HRMS)
The official orders were issued by Director (Passenger Marketing)-II, Sanjay Manocha, and Joint Director/Establishment (Welfare), MM Jeyabalan, marking a positive step toward improving the travel experience for the railway's own workforce.
