Railway workers in the Jabalpur Division displayed exemplary courage on August 29 and 30, 2026, when they manually guided trains through three feet of floodwaters on the Satna-Manikpur rail section. The severe disruption was caused by the Doda Dam breach following continuous heavy rainfall, which triggered the overflow of the Mandakini River near Chitahra and Majhgawa stations, resulting in the worst flooding in the Chitrakoot region in 23 years. A total of 48 trains were impacted, comprising 24 passenger services and 20 freight trains. Despite poor track visibility and hazardous conditions, railway authorities successfully maintained operations through swift safety interventions.
To ensure absolute passenger safety, brave railway personnel including pointsmen walked ahead of moving trains in knee-deep water while carrying red flags.
Trains such as 11055 and 19489 were operated at a strictly controlled speed of 10 km/h under the direct, continuous supervision of these staff members. The Chief Public Relations Officer confirmed that stringent safety protocols were enforced and specialized engineering teams were deployed for intensive patrolling along the submerged rail sections.
Beyond the railway network, the massive flooding created a severe crisis across Chitrakoot, forcing authorities to airlift approximately 750 people to safety. Local infrastructure suffered heavy damage, including major road closures and significant structural harm to the main bridge connecting Chitrakoot to Nayagaon. Connectivity to key religious and tourist sites, including the Gupt Godavari and Kamadgiri parikrama routes, was temporarily severed. Through exceptional vigilance and precautionary measures, Indian Railways managed to restore traffic operations safely through the affected tracks.
