Railways & IRCTC Fined Over Madgaon-Delhi Schedule Change
Ferozepur Consumer Commission orders Railways and IRCTC to pay ₹15,620 after a passenger missed a train due to uncommunicated schedule changes.

A passenger traveling from Goa to Delhi missed their train due to a sudden, unannounced change in the timetable. Consequently, the Ferozepur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered the Railways and IRCTC to pay compensation for the mishap.
The Missed Journey: A Two-Hour Discrepancy
The incident occurred on June 10, 2024, when the complainant booked three tickets for a trip from Madgaon, Goa, to Hazrat Nizamuddin, Delhi. Despite arriving at the station according to the originally scheduled time, the passenger found that the train had already departed.
Investigations revealed that the train's departure time had been advanced by two hours. Because this change was not effectively communicated to the traveler, the entire journey was missed.
Defense Arguments from Authorities
During the legal proceedings, the railway authorities presented several arguments to contest the claim:
- The Railways: Argued that the rescheduling was a necessary part of the seasonal monsoon timetable. They claimed the updates were made available via station notice boards, public announcements, and the Konkan Railway website, suggesting the responsibility to verify updates lay with the passenger.
- IRCTC: Asserted that its involvement is strictly limited to online booking services and that it holds no liability for operational adjustments or scheduling changes.
Commission's Verdict: Deficiency in Service
Rejecting these defenses, the Commission—led by President Kiranjit Kaur Arora and Member Suman Khanna—ruled that there was a clear 'deficiency in service.' The bench emphasized that passengers are entitled to reliable service and should not be left at the mercy of administrative oversights.

- ₹10,620: A full refund of the original ticket cost.
- ₹5,000: Compensation for mental agony, harassment, and litigation expenses.
