Raipur Gets ₹175 Cr Electric Locomotive Facility Boost

The Ministry of Railways has taken a massive step toward strengthening the rail network in Chhattisgarh. A foundation stone has been laid for a new Raipur electric locomotive facility, marking a significant upgrade to the state's railway infrastructure.
Enhancing Locomotive Capacity and Efficiency
This strategic project, which was approved on July 10, 2026, involves a substantial investment of ₹175 crore. The facility is designed to integrate with the existing High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed under the South East Central Railway (SECR).
Key Project Highlights
- Immediate Capacity: The facility will provide additional homing capacity for 250 three-phase electric locomotives.
- Future Readiness: Plans are in place to expand the facility to support the maintenance of up to 300 high-power electric engines.
- Operational Benefits: The upgrade aims to streamline maintenance processes, improve locomotive availability, and boost overall rail operational efficiency in the region.
A Massive Leap in Chhattisgarh's Rail Funding
This development comes at a time when Chhattisgarh is seeing an unprecedented surge in railway investment. For the 2026-27 financial year, the state has been allocated ₹7,470 crore for railway projects. This is a staggering increase compared to the annual average of just ₹311 crore recorded between 2009 and 2014.
