Raipur-Raoghat Rail Line & MEMU Services Launch Oct 20

A historic milestone is set for the Bastar region as the long-awaited Raipur-Raoghat rail line is scheduled for its official inauguration on October 20, 2026. This project, which represents the realization of a five-decade-long infrastructure goal, will finally provide a direct rail link between the Bastar region and the state capital, Raipur.

The grand ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 PM, with main celebrations hosted at both the Raipur and Raoghat railway stations. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai will be present to personally flag off the inaugural train services. While the Chief Minister leads the ground celebrations, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to attend the event virtually.

New MEMU Services and Affordable Travel

To bolster regional connectivity, the Railway Board has approved several new services to cater to the growing demand. Passengers will benefit from the following new routes:

  • Raipur-Raoghat MEMU (68768/68769)
  • Two new Raipur-Kurud MEMU services

The operational timetable for these routes has already been finalized. In a major win for commuters, the 219 km journey from Raipur to Raoghat will cost approximately ₹55, offering a significantly more affordable alternative to current bus transportation. The project reached this stage following a successful speed trial and inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on September 22, 2026.

Transforming Lives in the Bastar Region

This rail link is set to be a lifeline for the local population, directly benefiting roughly 20,000 tribal residents across 60 villages. By improving access to essential services, the line will facilitate better connectivity to:

  • Healthcare facilities
  • Educational institutions
  • Employment hubs

Beyond passenger travel, the line serves a vital industrial purpose by facilitating the supply of iron ore to the Bhilai Steel Plant and supporting the trade of forest produce. The inauguration will also include the opening of a new electric rail engine maintenance facility in Raipur.

A Vision for the Future

The project, which stems from a tripartite agreement signed in 2007 between the NMDC, SAIL, the Chhattisgarh government, and Indian Railways, has seen accelerated progress since May 2024 under the direct monitoring of the Prime Minister's Office.

The journey does not end at Raoghat. Plans are already underway for a 140 km extension from Raoghat to Jagdalpur. With ₹513 crore allocated in the 2026 budget for this next phase, the extension aims for completion by 2031, which will fully integrate the Bastar region with the state capital.

The inauguration ceremony will be attended by several prominent leaders, including Members of Parliament such as Bhojraj Nag, Vijay Baghel, Brijmohan Agrawal, Rajeev Shukla, Ranjeet Ranjan, Lakshmi Verma, and Roop Kumari Chaudhary, alongside local MLAs and various public representatives.
