Ranchi Station North Gate to Close in January 2027
Ranchi Railway Station's North Gate will close in Jan 2027 for a 447 crore redevelopment. All passenger traffic will shift to the new South Gate.
Major changes are coming to Ranchi Railway Station. As part of a massive ₹447 crore redevelopment project, the station's primary entrance, known as the North Gate, is scheduled to shut down in January 2027.
Once the North Gate is closed, all passenger entry and exit operations will be redirected to the South Gate. This new gateway is already nearing completion and has already seen its first taste of passenger movement during the recent Durga Puja period.
Shift to the South Gate
The transition to the South Gate is part of a strategic plan submitted by railway authorities to the district administration to streamline traffic flow. To ensure a smooth transition, several infrastructure projects are currently underway:
- Railway Colony Routes: Two new routes passing through the Railway Colony are under construction, with a target completion date set for this December.
- New Road Network: Plans are in motion to construct four new roads, each reaching widths of up to 22 meters, to provide future connectivity to the North Gate area. These are expected to be completed within one year.
The South Gate is being designed with modern amenities in mind, featuring dedicated parking spaces and new ticket counters to improve the passenger experience.
Traveler Impact: Who is Affected?
The redevelopment will bring significant changes to how commuters access the station. Depending on where you are traveling from, your route may change drastically.
Improved Accessibility: The South Gate will offer much better connectivity for passengers arriving from:
- Doranda
- Hinoo
- The Airport
- Birsa Chowk
- Dhurwa
Potential Challenges: However, travelers coming from certain directions may face logistical hurdles. Commuters from Koker, Booty More, Khelgaon, Harmu, and Kishorganj will likely need to navigate through Doranda and Rajendra Chowk. This detour may result in increased travel distances and potential traffic congestion in those areas.
Infrastructure Boost and Future Vision
To further ease the transition, a previously proposed Railway Overbridge (ROB) near Chutia is being considered. This project, estimated at ₹40 crore, is designed to create a direct link from the Indian Oil area to the South Gate.
These massive upgrades are being overseen by the Chakradharpur Division under the leadership of DRM Shri Tarun Huria. The developments are part of the broader 'Rail Jan Samvad' initiative, a mission aimed at enhancing passenger amenities across 78 different stations within the division.
