Central Government Approves Massive Railway Expansion for Renigunta Arakkonam Section
The Indian Union Cabinet has cleared a major infrastructure upgrade to boost rail connectivity in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by approving the construction of third and fourth railway lines on the Renigunta-Arakkonam section. Announced on September 10, 2026, this project carries an estimated total cost of ₹1,936 crore for the entire 77-kilometer stretch, with ₹1,157 crore specifically allocated for the segment within Andhra Pradesh. This crucial initiative is part of a larger nationwide multi-tracking package comprising five projects across four states with a total investment of ₹10,021 crore. Local leadership, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, have expressed their gratitude to the central government for the sanction. - Total project length spans 77 kilometers, out of which 46 kilometers fall within the Tirupati and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh, with the rest extending into Tamil Nadu.
- Completion timeframe is targeted within three years, aiming for a broader target completion by 2029-30.
- Land acquisition is actively progressing following a January 2026 gazette notification designating it as a special railway project.
Enhancing Passenger Experience and Freight Capacity
The expansion project is strategically designed to improve connectivity along the heavily congested Mumbai-Chennai rail network. By adding third and fourth tracks, Indian Railways aims to significantly reduce train congestion, improve overall punctuality, and offer a smoother travel experience for millions of daily commuters and pilgrims. The upgraded corridor will facilitate seamless travel to major religious destinations, including the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, the Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Tiruttani, and the Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple in Tiruchanur.
In addition to passenger benefits, the project is a massive boost for industrial logistics. Upon completion, this specific section is projected to handle an additional 7.21 million tonnes of freight per annum. This addition forms a vital part of the broader multi-tracking package's overall objective to increase freight handling capacity by 47 million tonnes per annum, driving regional economic growth and freight efficiency across Southern India.
