Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project: Uttarakhand's 78% Milestone
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project has reached 78% progress. Explore how this Rs 37,000 crore engineering marvel is transforming Uttarakhand.

The Rishikesh Karnaprayag Rail Project is rapidly advancing, carving a path through the challenging Himalayan terrain to redefine connectivity in Uttarakhand. As of August 2026, the ambitious 125-kilometer broad-gauge railway line has achieved an overall progress of approximately 78%, moving closer to its targeted completion in December 2029.
Estimated at a cost of Rs 37,000 crore, this project is being hailed as a transformative engineering marvel that will bolster spiritual tourism and provide a vital lifeline to the region.
"An engineering marvel and a future lifeline for Uttarakhand." — Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways
A Subterranean Engineering Feat
Navigating the complex geology of the Young Fold Mountains has required unprecedented engineering precision. A staggering 83% of the total line—roughly 104 kilometers—will run underground. Key technical milestones achieved so far include:
- Tunnel Excavation: 97% of the required tunnel excavation is now complete.
- Main Tunnels: 101 kilometers of main tunnels have been finished.
- Escape Tunnels: 95 kilometers of escape tunnels are already in place.
- Bridges: 11 major bridges have been successfully completed out of the planned 19.
The completed infrastructure will eventually feature 12 railway stations and 16 main tunnels to traverse the mountainous landscape.
Advanced Technology and Domestic Manufacturing
To tackle the soft strata of the Himalayas, specialized Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized. In a significant boost to national self-reliance, India is increasing its capacity to manufacture these massive machines domestically, with 8-meter and 15-meter diameter TBMs now actively in use on-site.
The project is being implemented by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), with major construction support from industry leaders including Larsen & Toubro, HCC, NEC, Megha, Max Infra (I) Ltd., and Navayuga Engineering. Additionally, Siemens has been awarded a Rs 263 crore contract to handle the overhead electrification across a 102-kilometer section of the line.
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
Recognizing the ecological sensitivity of the region, significant efforts are being made to ensure environmental sustainability. An initiative launched in October 2026 aims to plant 10,000 trees on reclaimed muck sites. This green corridor is designed to support horticulture and aid groundwater recharge by introducing fruit-bearing and bee-foraging flora to the area.
