Rishikesh Karnaprayag railway line will be completed by December 2029

The Rishikesh to Karnaprayag railway line is officially scheduled for completion by December 2029 at a total project cost of 37,000 crore rupees. This major infrastructure development aims to transform Himalayan connectivity across Uttarakhand and mark a significant milestone for the regional transport network.

Here are the key details of the project:
- Developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited as a 125-kilometer long railway project.
- Spans across five districts including Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli.
- Achieved 78 percent overall progress as of August 29, 2026.
- Features massive tunneling work with 97 percent excavation already finished.
- Supported by top construction firms including L&T, HCC, NEC, and Megha.

Project Scope and Regional Impact

The 125-kilometer railway project serves as a vital link connecting the national capital directly to prominent religious and spiritual destinations like Devprayag and Karnaprayag. Saleem Ahmad, the Chairman and Managing Director of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, confirmed the impressive progress achieved so far. Because of its massive potential to boost local tourism, generate employment, and uplift regional economies, the Ministry of Railways maintains this undertaking as a top priority.

Construction Milestones and Technical Progress

Tunneling efforts form the most challenging part of the engineering work along this complex Himalayan corridor. Project data confirms that 97 percent of the required tunnel excavation is already complete. This translates to 101 kilometers out of 104 kilometers successfully excavated for the main tunnels and 95 kilometers out of 98 kilometers for the escape tunnels. Beyond tunnels, the infrastructure includes 19 major bridges, out of which 11 are fully completed and work continues on the rest. Furthermore, workers have constructed 8 access roads covering 5 kilometers to reach otherwise inaccessible terrains.

Official Outlook on State Development

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted that the railway line is progressing rapidly and nearing a decisive development phase. He noted that the rail link will significantly improve hill connectivity, enhance border security, and open new avenues for local enterprises and job seekers. Engineers and contractors are now fully focused on executing the remaining 22 percent of the project scope to meet the strict December 2029 deadline.
