Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail: Himalayan Marvel to Connect by 2029
The ₹37,000 crore Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway project is set for 2029 completion, featuring India's longest railway tunnel.

The ambitious 125-kilometer Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway project is racing toward its targeted completion in December 2029. This massive infrastructure undertaking, estimated to cost ₹37,000 crore, is set to become a critical lifeline for Uttarakhand, transforming connectivity across the rugged Garhwal Himalayas.
An Engineering Feat in the Mountains
Navigating the treacherous Himalayan terrain requires unprecedented engineering precision. To manage the steep and rocky landscape, approximately 83 percent of the total route—spanning 104 kilometers—is being constructed through tunnels. The project's massive scale is reflected in its infrastructure requirements:
- 12 Stations to serve local and pilgrim traffic.
- 28 Tunnels to cut through mountain ranges.
- 57 Bridges of various sizes to cross deep valleys and rivers.
One of the most remarkable features of this project is Tunnel Number 8. Situated between Devprayag and Janasu, this 14.58-kilometer-long tunnel is projected to become the longest railway tunnel in India upon its completion.
Rapid Progress and Indigenous Technology
Construction is moving at a significant pace. As of October 22, 2026, engineers have successfully completed 101 kilometers of main tunnels and 95 kilometers of escape tunnels. The project is being implemented by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), utilizing feasibility assessments from GEODATA Engineering and specialized spectrum studies from IIT Roorkee to mitigate potential disaster risks.
In a major boost to domestic manufacturing, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that India is now producing its own indigenous Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Currently, TBMs with diameters of 8 and 15 meters are being utilized, with plans already underway to develop even larger models exceeding 16 meters to conquer the most difficult Himalayan sections.
Strategic Importance and Pilgrimage Connectivity
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line is much more than a transport link; it is a project of immense strategic and religious importance. It will provide seamless access for devotees participating in the Char Dham Yatra, making travel to the Garhwal region significantly safer and faster.
Additionally, the railway holds vital national security implications. By strengthening accessibility toward areas near the India-China border—located roughly 123 kilometers from Karnaprayag—the line will enhance the ability to move resources and personnel through the high-altitude Himalayan corridors.
