The decades-long wait for rail connectivity in the Bastar region is finally coming to an end. A new MEMU passenger train service connecting Rowghat to Raipur is officially set to begin operations on October 20, 2026.

Affordable Travel for the Bastar Region

Spanning a total distance of 219 kilometers, this new service is designed to be highly accessible for local commuters, with a passenger fare set at a budget-friendly ₹55. The inauguration ceremony will be conducted via video conferencing by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

The event will see the presence of several high-profile dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Ministers Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma. Additionally, Members of Parliament Rajeev Shukla, Ranjeet Ranjan, Laxmi Verma, Roop Kumari Choudhary, Bhojraj Nag, Vijay Baghel, and Brijmohan Agrawal will be in attendance to mark this historic milestone for the region.

Infrastructure and Project Milestones

The launch follows the successful completion of the 95-kilometer Dallirajhara-Rowghat new line project. A critical final step was achieved on September 22, 2026, when the Commissioner of Railway Safety conducted a successful inspection and speed trial on the final 17.5-kilometer Taroki-Rowghat section.

This rail link, which was originally conceptualized under a 2008 Memorandum of Understanding, represents the first time Indian Railways has extended its network into the remote Rowghat area.

Massive Investment and Economic Benefits

The project is a significant financial undertaking, with the total cost exceeding ₹1,880 crore. Notably, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) contributed approximately ₹1,735 crore toward the project's completion.

Beyond just moving people, this new line is expected to serve as a vital economic artery for Chhattisgarh by providing:

  • Industrial Support: Facilitating the efficient transportation of iron ore to the Bhilai Steel Plant.
  • Social Development: Improved access to essential healthcare and education services for remote populations.
  • Job Creation: Enhancing employment opportunities and regional connectivity.
