RRB Station Master 2026: Major Selection Reforms Announced

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has announced a significant overhaul of the recruitment process for the RRB Station Master Recruitment 2026 cycle. According to an official Railway Board notice issued on October 7, 2026, the selection methodology is undergoing structural changes to streamline the hiring of new personnel.
Shift to Dedicated Centralized Employment Notification
In a major departure from previous years, the recruitment for Station Masters will no longer be integrated with the Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) examinations. Instead, the RRB will conduct the process through a dedicated Centralized Employment Notification (CEN). This move is expected to provide a more focused examination environment specifically tailored to the requirements of the Station Master role.
New Single-Stage CBT Exam Pattern
One of the most impactful changes is the transition from a two-stage Computer Based Test (CBT) format to a single-stage CBT. This new examination structure is designed to test a broader range of competencies in a single sitting. Key details of the new exam include:
- Total Marks: 100 marks
- Duration: 120 minutes
- Negative Marking: One-third (1/3) of a mark will be deducted for every incorrect response.
Detailed Syllabus Breakdown
The 100-mark paper will be divided into three distinct sections to evaluate different candidate capabilities:
- Basic Science, Mathematical & Analytical Capability: 60 marks
- Logical Capability (including English Comprehension): 20 marks
- Mental Reasoning: 20 marks
The Selection Path: CBAT and Merit Weightage
Passing the initial CBT is only the first step. Candidates who perform well in the single-stage exam will be shortlisted for a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). The selection follows a strict ratio of 1:8 per vacancy.
To ensure a balanced evaluation of both technical knowledge and psychological aptitude, the final merit list will be calculated using a weighted scoring system:
- CBT Score: 70% weightage
- CBAT Performance: 30% weightage
Medical Standards and Salary Structure
Prospective Station Masters must meet stringent health requirements to ensure operational safety. Candidates are required to fulfill the A-2 medical standard to be eligible for appointment.
Upon successful recruitment, the position is classified under Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, offering a basic pay of ₹35,400.
Important Dates and Vacancy Projections
While the official detailed CEN is still awaited, the preliminary timeline for the 2026 cycle is as follows:
- Official Notification Release: Third week of October 2026
- Application Registration: Expected to open in November 2026
- Tentative Examination Date: January 2027
Note: While the exact number of vacancies will be confirmed in the upcoming notification, early projections suggest there will be at least 500 openings available for eligible candidates.
