Rail Vikas Nigam Limited achieves major tunnel breakthrough for Rishikesh Karnaprayag rail project in Uttarakhand

The ambitious Rishikesh-Karnaprayag new broad gauge rail line project has crossed a major engineering hurdle with the successful final breakthrough of its 10.847-kilometer-long escape tunnel-1. This crucial development took place on Friday, September 11, 2026, marking both the second-longest tunnel in the entire project and the 41st overall tunnel breakthrough completed to date. Executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited Rishikesh Project Implementation Unit under the Ministry of Railways, the construction team successfully navigated extremely complex geological conditions in the Himalayan terrain. The alignment involved traversing highly tectonized, multi-folded, and faulted rock formations, where engineers and workers encountered severe shearing, crushed rock, and thick mylonite zones located near the Main Boundary Thrust.

Overcoming Himalayan Engineering Challenges

Project manager Nishith Sharma described the achievement as a critical success, supported by Deputy General Manager (Civil) O.P. Malgudi. Max Infra Projects serves as the contractor for Package-I, currently employing approximately 1,000 personnel working 24 hours a day, 28 days per month to keep the massive infrastructure initiative moving forward. The monumental Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project spans a total distance of 125 kilometers, with roughly 104 kilometers of the route designed to pass entirely through tunnels.

Project Timeline and Future Outlook

As of September 12, 2026, only five additional tunnel breakthroughs remain pending across the entire alignment. Railway officials have confirmed that construction remains firmly on schedule, with the ultimate target of initiating passenger train operations up to Byasi by the year 2028. This transformative rail link will significantly boost connectivity, religious tourism, and socio-economic development across the region while providing a safe, all-weather transport alternative for travelers and residents alike.
