Rail Vikas Nigam Limited achieves major tunnel breakthrough for Rishikesh Karnaprayag rail project in Uttarakhand

The ambitious Rishikesh-Karnaprayag new broad gauge rail line project has crossed a major engineering hurdle with the successful final breakthrough of its 10.847-kilometer-long escape tunnel-1. This crucial development took place on Friday, September 11, 2026, marking both the second-longest tunnel in the entire project and the 41st overall tunnel breakthrough completed to date. Executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited Rishikesh Project Implementation Unit under the Ministry of Railways, the construction team successfully navigated extremely complex geological conditions in the Himalayan terrain. The alignment involved traversing highly tectonized, multi-folded, and faulted rock formations, where engineers and workers encountered severe shearing, crushed rock, and thick mylonite zones located near the Main Boundary Thrust.
