₹307 Cr Vande Bharat Maintenance Hub Coming to Sabarmati

Indian Railways is making a massive leap in infrastructure with the development of a new Vande Bharat maintenance hub Sabarmati. This ₹307 crore project, located at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot in Ahmedabad, is designed to provide world-class servicing for the nation's flagship high-speed trainsets.

A Massive Upgrade for Western Railway

Overseen by the Western Railway's Ahmedabad Division, the project is being executed as part of the Phase II expansion of the Sabarmati depot. The primary objective is to centralize the servicing of 24-coach Vande Bharat trainsets, ensuring that heavy repairs and scheduled maintenance are handled with maximum efficiency and precision.

Advanced Infrastructure and Specialized Facilities

The new hub is equipped with several specialized sheds and structures designed to meet the complex technical requirements of modern trainsets:

  • Heavy Repair Bay Shed: Measuring 322 meters by 25 meters, this facility is nearing completion. It features two dedicated maintenance lines—one specifically for lifting coaches and removing bogies, and another for servicing passenger amenities, braking systems, and electrical components.
  • Wheel Care Shed: A recently completed facility equipped with advanced machinery for the precise maintenance of axles and wheels.
  • Electrical Systems Shed: A 322-meter by 20-meter section dedicated to the repair and assembly of critical components, including traction motors and transformers.
  • Operational Support: The facility includes four stabling lines totaling 2,547 meters and a newly finalized 30-meter by 20-meter electrical substation building.

High-Capacity Maintenance Schedules

To ensure the fleet remains in peak condition, the hub has been calibrated to handle rigorous maintenance schedules through two primary categories:

  1. SS-I (Shop Schedule) Maintenance: This process is designed to handle one 24-coach trainset every 30 days, providing an annual capacity of 12 trainsets.
  2. SS-II Maintenance: This more intensive schedule will process one trainset every 45 days, allowing for an annual capacity of eight trainsets.

Preparing for the Sleeper Era

The establishment of this hub is a strategic move by Indian Railways to prepare for the next generation of travel. This infrastructure is critical for the upcoming deployment of 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, each consisting of 24 coaches, which are slated to enter service during the first half of 2027.
