₹307 Cr Vande Bharat Maintenance Hub Coming to Sabarmati

Western Railway is set to revolutionize the upkeep of India's premium high-speed fleet. A massive Vande Bharat maintenance hub is currently under development in Sabarmati, Gujarat, specifically designed to cater to the sophisticated needs of 24-coach Vande Bharat trainsets.

This project, which is part of the Phase II expansion of the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot (ICD) under the Ahmedabad Division, represents a significant capital investment of ₹307 crore. The facility aims to provide localized, high-tech care, significantly reducing the reliance on external depots for these advanced trains.

State-of-the-Art Repair Infrastructure

The facility is being built with heavy-duty engineering at its core to ensure the longevity of the high-speed fleet. One of the most significant structures is the Heavy Repair Bay Shed, which measures 322 meters by 25 meters and is nearing its final stages of completion. This shed will feature two specialized maintenance lines:

  • Line 1: Equipped with synchronized pit jacks designed to lift entire coaches and facilitate the seamless removal of bogies.
  • Line 2: Dedicated to the intricate maintenance of passenger amenities, coach interiors, electrical systems, and critical braking components.

To ensure wheel safety and precision, a 75-meter by 40-meter Wheel Care Shed has already been completed. This facility is packed with advanced machinery, including CNC surface wheel lathes, CNC axle-turning lathes, dynamic wheel-balancing machines, and hydraulic wheel presses for overhauling axles and wheels.

Specialized Component Maintenance

Beyond the main bays, the hub includes a dedicated 322-meter by 20-meter section shed. This area is specifically designed for the repair and reassembly of high-tech components that power the Vande Bharat, such as:

  • Traction transformers and converters
  • Electric motors
  • Pantographs
  • Roof-mounted package units

To support these heavy operations, the infrastructure also includes four stabling lines spanning a total of 2,547 meters and a newly completed 30-meter by 20-meter Electrical Substation (ESS) building.

Optimized Maintenance Cycles and Capacity

The Sabarmati hub is engineered to handle scheduled maintenance cycles with high efficiency. The facility is designed to perform two primary types of maintenance:

  1. SS-I Maintenance: A 30-day cycle for 24-coach trainsets.
  2. SS-II Maintenance: A more intensive 45-day cycle.

Once fully operational, the hub will have the capacity to support 12 trainsets for SS-I maintenance or eight trainsets for SS-II maintenance annually, centralizing complex repair workflows and ensuring the Vande Bharat fleet remains in peak condition across the nation.
