Saharanpur: New Railway Quarters for Staff Unveiled

In a significant move to enhance employee welfare, new residential quarters and flats have been successfully constructed in Ward Number 15 of Saharanpur. These new units are specifically designed to provide much-needed improved living facilities for the railway workforce, whom officials describe as a vital part of the 'Railway family'.

Nationwide Colony Renovation Drive

The development in Saharanpur is not an isolated event but part of a massive, comprehensive plan initiated by the Railway Board. The board is currently working on a large-scale mission to renovate and reconstruct aging railway colonies across the entire network.

To ensure that living standards are elevated, the policy focuses on identifying colonies in poor condition for either extensive maintenance or the construction of entirely new housing stock. Key locations identified for this major infrastructure upgrade include:

  • Saharanpur
  • Ambala
  • Bathinda

Saharanpur Station: A World-Class Transformation

While housing is being improved, the Saharanpur railway station itself is undergoing a dramatic makeover under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This project is aimed at transforming the station into a world-class facility to better serve passengers.

The ambitious master plan for the station includes several key upgrades:

  • Complete renovation of waiting halls, ticket offices, and washrooms.
  • A total redesign of the circulating areas.
  • Installation of new entry and exit gates.
  • Enhanced parking facilities for commuters.
  • The construction of a roof plaza, which will help integrate the railway premises directly with the city center.

New Housing Rules for Railway Employees

In addition to physical infrastructure, the Railway Board has recently updated its administrative regulations regarding housing to provide more flexibility to its staff.

For employees who choose to resign to pursue technical positions in other sectors, a new rule will allow them to retain their railway quarters for up to four months at standard rent. This policy is slated to come into effect on March 18, 2026.

Furthermore, the board has introduced relaxed housing retention rules to support families. These administrative relaxations are specifically designed to assist employees whose children are currently enrolled in school, particularly for students in grades one through eight.
