Samastipur Railway Division Issues Red Alert As Water Levels Rise In Gandak And Budhi Gandak Rivers
The Samastipur Railway Division has officially issued a red alert following severe flooding in Nepal and a dangerous surge in the water levels of the Gandak and Budhi Gandak rivers. Indian Railways authorities are taking maximum precautions to safeguard passengers and vital infrastructure across the affected rail networks in Bihar.
As of August 27, 2026, railway authorities have deployed 24-hour surveillance teams to monitor vulnerable tracks and 253 major rail bridges. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Jyoti Prakash Mishra has instructed engineering departments, trackmen, and specialized patrolling units to remain on high alert. The division is fully prepared to control, regulate, or cancel train services immediately if rising water levels threaten the safety of rail sections. Furthermore, railway officials are in constant touch with the state Flood Control Director and local district administrations in East and West Champaran to share real-time updates.
Government and Disaster Management Review
Top state leadership is closely monitoring the flash flood threat emanating from Nepal. Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyay Amrit recently held a high-level video conference with District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police across vulnerable districts to ensure strict adherence to disaster management protocols. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has also reviewed the developing situation, directing security and administrative agencies to maintain special vigilance along the Bihar-Nepal border.
While water levels in the Gandak River had briefly receded from their initial peak, fresh heavy rainfall near Devghat has sparked renewed fears of flooding. To tackle any emergency, railway authorities have strengthened coordination with state and national disaster response forces, including the NDRF and SDRF. Meanwhile, the state government has launched urgent evacuation drives and community support programs in districts including Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Saran, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, and Sheohar.
