Samastipur Railway Overbridge closed for repairs, check new traffic diversion plan
The 56-year-old railway overbridge in Samastipur city was completely closed on Monday morning, July 6, 2026. This bridge is considered the lifeline of the city, and its closure has led to the implementation of a new traffic plan. What is the new traffic diversion plan for vehicles
The district administration has diverted traffic to alternative routes to avoid congestion. Buses heading toward Begusarai and Rosera will now operate from the Housing Board ground. Vehicles going from Rosera to Muzaffarpur will move via Kanhaiya Chowk, Bullechak Railway Gumti, Mahadev Chowk, and Korbadda. Those coming from Tajpur Road and Dharmpur will enter the city through Paswan Chowk and Magardahi Ghat.
How will heavy vehicles and other traffic be managed
Heavy vehicles coming from Darbhanga, Madhubani, and Nepal will be redirected to NH-28 via Kalyanpur, Pusa, and Tajpur. To ensure smooth movement, additional police force has been deployed at major squares. The administration is also coordinating with East Central Railway (ECR) to open railway gates immediately after trains pass to prevent long jams.

Sadar SDO Dilip Kumar and Traffic DSP Ashish Raj stated that the bridge was in a dilapidated condition, making repairs urgent for public safety. DM Roshan Kushwaha confirmed that the bridge has been handed over to the repair agency. The work involves replacing damaged extension joints and strengthening the structure. The agency has been ordered to work in three shifts, 24 hours a day, to complete the project by August 15, 2026.
