Santragachi-Khatipura Express Flags Off; Tatanagar Hub Expansion

The Santragachi–Khatipura Express has officially commenced its journey, marking a significant milestone in regional rail connectivity. This new service, flagged off on October 26, 2026, aims to bridge the gap between Jharkhand and Rajasthan, providing a direct link for passengers traveling through major North Indian hubs.

Alongside this launch, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform Tatanagar into a premier railway hub. The plan focuses on massive infrastructure upgrades, station redevelopment, and enhanced capacity to support both passenger and freight traffic.

The inaugural special service of the Santragachi–Khatipura Express is designed to strengthen the bond between major cities in the East and the North. By providing a streamlined route, the service will facilitate easier travel for passengers across several key locations, including:

  • Tatanagar and Ranchi
  • Daltonganj and Sasaram
  • Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and Mirzapur
  • Prayagraj and Kanpur
  • Agra and Khatipura

Tatanagar Station: A World-Class Transformation

To accommodate the growing influx of passengers and future train services, the Tatanagar station is set for a massive makeover. The redevelopment blueprint includes several high-impact upgrades:

  • Platform Expansion: The number of platforms at Tatanagar is proposed to increase from five to nine.
  • Modern Amenities: The revamp will feature new station buildings, a modern air concourse, improved circulating areas, and expanded parking facilities at both the northern and southern ends.
  • Yard Capacity: To manage more trains, there is a proposal to construct four additional loop lines in the UP grid along with three new platforms.

Infrastructure Push: Multi-Tracking and Vande Bharat Hub

To decongest traffic and boost sectional speeds, the Ministry is executing extensive multi-tracking projects across the region. Significant progress is already visible, with the third line on the Rajkharsawan–Dangoaposi section already commissioned. Other ongoing and planned projects include:

  • Adityapur–Tatanagar–Salgajhari: Construction of a third line is currently underway.
  • Sini–Kandra and Chandil–Gamharia: Plans are in place for third and fourth line developments.
  • Chandil–Kandra: Approval has been granted for third and fourth lines.

Furthermore, Tatanagar is being positioned as a major hub for Vande Bharat services. The government is currently processing approvals to develop a dedicated coaching depot and maintenance facilities specifically for these high-speed trains.

Boosting Regional Growth and Tourism

The expansion is not just about tracks and trains; it is a strategic move for the economic landscape of Jharkhand. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to provide a substantial impetus to:

Industrial development, freight transit, employment generation, educational accessibility, and pilgrimage tourism across Tatanagar and its adjoining regions.

Additionally, the development of a new railway station at Sundarnagar near Tatanagar, along with the construction of various Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs), will further integrate the railway network with the local road infrastructure.
