SECR Boosts Capacity: 110KM Route Gets Automatic Signaling
South East Central Railway upgrades 110km of track with automatic signaling to boost train capacity and safety in the Bilaspur zone.

The South East Central Railway (SECR) has successfully commissioned automatic signaling systems across a 110-kilometer stretch of its rail network, marking a significant advancement in regional infrastructure. This upgrade specifically targets the Sakti–Jharadih–Kharsia and Harri–Venkatnagar–Nigaura sections, aimed at enhancing both operational capacity and safety standards within the Bilaspur zone.
Increased Train Throughput and Efficiency
The transition to automatic block signaling is a game-changer for train movement in these sections. Previously, the signaling system restricted movement to only one train within a single block section between two stations. This often resulted in following trains being forced to wait for the preceding service to reach the next station before they could proceed.
With the new implementation, multiple trains can now operate within a single block section simultaneously. The system is designed so that as soon as a train clears the station yard, it automatically provides a green signal for the following train to move forward. This seamless transition significantly reduces waiting times and streamlines the movement of services across the network.
Advanced Monitoring and Safety Features
Beyond speed and efficiency, the upgrade introduces high-precision monitoring to the tracks. By installing signals approximately every 1.5 kilometers, the SECR can now leverage enhanced technical capabilities, including:
- Real-time location data: Precise tracking of train positions across the upgraded route.
- Automatic alerts: Immediate detection and notification of any technical anomalies.
- Enhanced oversight: Improved ability to monitor the movement of all services within the block.
Expanding Modernization in Chhattisgarh
This project is part of a larger, ongoing effort by the SECR to modernize its major transit corridors throughout Chhattisgarh and its surrounding regions. By prioritizing automatic block signaling, the zone is actively working to increase the volume of traffic it can handle safely.
The SECR has successfully deployed similar signaling upgrades in other critical segments, including the Bilha–Jayramnagar, Kalmna–Durg, and Champa–Uraga routes, continuing its momentum in infrastructure development.
