7 Unmanned Coaches Roll 6km and Derail in Tamil Nadu
Seven empty railway coaches rolled 6km unattended from Jolarpettai yard, derailing near Thamaleri Muthur and disrupting Bengaluru-Chennai trains.

A major railway disaster was narrowly avoided in Tamil Nadu on November 2, 2026, after seven empty train coaches rolled uncontrolled for approximately six kilometers. The unmanned coaches, which were stationed at the Jolarpettai Junction yard in the Tirupattur district for maintenance, eventually derailed near Thamaleri Muthur, causing significant disruption to rail traffic.
Operational Oversight Leads to Uncontrolled Roll
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was the result of a serious operational error. The coaches, which were intended for maintenance work, were reportedly pushed by an engine but were not properly secured by the yard staff. This oversight allowed the coaches to drift away from the yard and travel a distance of six kilometers along the tracks before coming to a halt through derailment.
Gatekeeper’s Alert Prevents Major Collision
The situation could have turned fatal if not for the swift action of a gatekeeper on duty. Hearing the unmistakable sound of the moving and derailing coaches, the gatekeeper immediately alerted the authorities. This crucial warning enabled railway officials to halt approaching trains on the busy Bengaluru-Chennai route, effectively preventing a potential collision between the moving coaches and oncoming passenger or freight trains.
Recovery Operations and Service Disruption
Railway personnel were quickly deployed to the site to clear the tracks and restore normalcy. The recovery process involved complex maneuvers, including:
- The use of gas-cutting equipment to separate the derailed coaches.
- Deployment of heavy JCB machinery to push the coaches clear of the railway line.
While no injuries were reported during the incident, the derailment caused significant delays for commuters on the Bengaluru-Chennai line. Following the event, there have been growing demands from the public for a formal inquiry into the safety protocols and operational monitoring systems currently in place at the Jolarpettai Junction yard.
