Shahdara Shamli Tapri Rail Doubling DPR Remains Incomplete Ahead of 2026 Deadline

The Detailed Project Report for the doubling of the 87.45-kilometer Shahdara-Shamli-Tapri railway line remains incomplete, casting uncertainty on the project as the September 30, 2026, deadline approaches. While the final cost of the infrastructure project will be determined only upon the finalization of the DPR, the project has seen significant administrative focus in recent years. In April 2026, the Railway Ministry authorized a budget of Rs 2.09 crore for the final location survey of the rail doubling project, which was expected to accelerate the tender and construction timeline. Previously, the electrification of the Shahdara-Shamli section was successfully completed in 2022 at a cost of approximately Rs 750 crore. The initiative for doubling and electrification was first raised in 2015 by former BJP MP Hukam Singh during discussions with the then-Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially announced the doubling of the Delhi-Shamli line on November 24, 2025, during an event in Baghpat. Additionally, the railway authority is upgrading the Shamli railway station into a modern, world-class facility under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with an investment of Rs 25 crore, as announced by the Minister in December 2025. Railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager of Delhi, have conducted site inspections at Shamli station to review progress and issue directives for the ongoing doubling efforts.

Progress and Modernization Initiatives

The ambitious infrastructure upgrade aims to transform commuter experiences across the route. Although the pending DPR creates a race against time for the 2026 target, recent funding allocations demonstrate strong commitment from Indian Railways. Passengers can look forward to enhanced connectivity, reduced congestion, and improved train speeds once the doubling work progresses past the initial survey stages. Meanwhile, the redevelopment of Shamli station is already well underway, promising modern passenger amenities and better station infrastructure for local travellers.
