Shuklaganj Railway Crossing Congestion: New ROB & Rapid Rail Plans
The chronic issue of Shuklaganj railway crossing congestion is finally moving toward a long-term resolution. For years, the critical Lucknow-Kanpur rail route has been a source of massive frustration, with frequent gridlock causing significant delays for MEMU trains, public commuters, and even emergency ambulances.
The bottleneck is largely due to the heavy rail traffic passing through the area. The crossing remains closed for approximately 10 hours every day to accommodate the passage of 53 pairs of both passenger and goods trains, leaving road users stranded for extended periods.
New Four-Lane Railway Over Bridge (ROB) Proposed
To alleviate these persistent bottlenecks, authorities have accelerated efforts to construct a new four-lane Railway Over Bridge (ROB). This infrastructure project is designed to provide a permanent bypass for road traffic, ensuring that the movement of vehicles is no longer dictated by the train schedule.
A dedicated railway team has already completed a preliminary survey regarding the construction. This formal report has been submitted to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) in Lucknow, with recommendations for a comprehensive joint survey involving all relevant railway departments to finalize the execution plan.
Kanpur-Lucknow Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Project
In addition to the bridge, the region is set for a massive connectivity upgrade through the Kanpur-Lucknow Namo Bharat Rapid Rail corridor project. This ambitious high-speed project is estimated to cost approximately 32,000 crore rupees and is intended to transform travel between Kanpur, Unnao, and Lucknow.
Current progress on the rapid rail project includes:
- Active Survey Work: Surveying is currently underway in Shuklaganj and near the Ganga Bridge.
- Report Preparation: The data collected will facilitate the creation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
- Alternative Analysis: The survey will also assist in developing an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) to optimize the route.
