Sidhi Gets First Rail Link After 70 Years of Isolation
Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh finally receives its first rail connection, ending a 70-year wait with new MEMU services.

The long-awaited dream of the residents of Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh has finally turned into reality. In a historic moment that marks the end of seven decades of isolation, the region officially joined the national rail map on October 24, 2026.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated two crucial new sections spanning 118 km. This development is a major component of the ongoing Lalitpur to Singrauli rail project, a massive infrastructure undertaking designed to bridge the connectivity gap in the region.
A Historic Milestone for Madhya Pradesh
For the people of Sidhi, this is more than just new tracks; it is the culmination of a struggle that began as early as 1956. While the project was first proposed over seventy years ago, it remained stuck in various stages of surveys and planning for decades. The expansion is set to transform the lives of local students, patients, traders, and farmers who have long been dependent solely on road transport.
The project aims to provide much-needed connectivity to a region that has been waiting for rail access since Independence.
Engineering Marvels and Massive Investment
The construction of these new lines involved significant engineering challenges due to the hilly terrain. The 118 km stretch was completed with an investment of approximately ₹1,943 crore. Key highlights of the engineering work include:
- The Rewa to Churhat Section: Spanning 65 km, this section features a 3.33 km tunnel, which stands as one of the longest tunnels in Madhya Pradesh.
- The Satna to Devendranagar Section: A 53 km stretch costing ₹873 crore, specifically designed to support the local limestone and cement industries.
- Bridge Infrastructure: Numerous bridges were completed to navigate the complex topography of the district.
New MEMU Services and Affordable Fares
Commercial operations officially commenced on October 26, running six days a week. To facilitate daily commuters, new MEMU services have been introduced between Devendranagar and Churhat.
Train Schedule Details:
- Train 61629 (Devendranagar to Churhat): Departs at 7:00 AM and arrives at 1:15 PM.
- Train 61630 (Churhat to Devendranagar): Departs at 3:00 PM and arrives at 9:25 PM.
One of the most significant benefits for the public is the affordability. Fares for these short-distance journeys are expected to start as low as ₹10 to ₹20, making rail travel highly accessible to the local population.
The Road Ahead: Future Connectivity
While this is a massive step forward, the work is far from over. The broader 541 km Lalitpur to Singrauli corridor is still under active construction to link Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh more effectively.
Authorities have set ambitious targets for the coming years:
- December 2026: Expected completion of connectivity to the Sidhi district headquarters.
- December 2028: Scheduled completion of the full corridor reaching Singrauli.
With significant budget allocations for railway projects in Madhya Pradesh, the transformation of the region's transport landscape is moving forward at a rapid pace.
