Sidhi Finally Gets First Train Service Since Independence!

In a historic milestone for the Vindhya region, the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh has finally witnessed its first train service since India achieved Independence. On October 24, 2026, a train entered the Rampur Naikin to Churhat stretch, fulfilling a long-awaited dream for the local population.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav virtually inaugurated the two new sections, which cover a total of 118 km. Along with the new tracks, a new MEMU passenger service was flagged off to provide much-needed connectivity to the region.

A 70-Year Wait for Connectivity

The proposal to bring rail connectivity to Sidhi was first advanced back in 1956. For the 1.13 million residents of the district, this development marks the end of a nearly seven-decade wait. The district, which holds historical significance as the birthplace of Raja Birbal, has long been isolated from the national rail network.

Engineering Challenges and Infrastructure Costs

Building the Vindhya rail connection required a massive investment of approximately ₹1,943 crore. The project was an engineering challenge due to the local hilly terrain, requiring the construction of several bridges and a 3.33 km tunnel to complete the line.

The total expenditure was divided across two major sections:

  • Rewa to Churhat section: 65 km at a cost of approximately ₹1,070 crore.
  • Satna to Devendranagar section: 53 km at a cost of approximately ₹873 crore.

New MEMU Train Schedule and Operations

Regular commercial services on the new route officially commenced on October 26, 2026. The service operates six days a week, with no service scheduled on Sundays. Passengers are encouraged to verify timings via the IRCTC or NTES apps, as operational adjustments are common following new inaugurations.

Current MEMU Timings:

  • Train 61629: Departs Devendranagar at approximately 07:00 and reaches Churhat by 13:15.
  • Train 61630: Departs Churhat at 15:00 and arrives at Devendranagar around 21:25.

Economic Impact and Future Expansion

The new rail link is expected to provide significant relief to students, farmers, traders, and patients by reducing travel time and costs compared to the previous reliance on congested highways. Furthermore, the connectivity is set to boost tourism for those visiting the Mukundpur White Tiger Safari and the Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve.

The expansion is set to continue, with train access expected to reach the Sidhi town headquarters by December 2026. Looking further ahead, the massive 541 km Lalitpur to Singrauli corridor is targeted for completion by December 2028, which will further enhance logistics for the cement and mineral industries in the Bundelkhand and Vindhya regions.
