Smart TTEs & Auto-Berth: Indian Railways' Digital Revolution!
Indian Railways is stepping into a high-tech era to make passenger journeys smoother and more predictable. Through a series of new digital trials, the railway is moving toward automating berth allotments and equipping staff with cutting-edge technology to enhance on-board services and operational efficiency.
No More Chasing TTEs: Automated Berth Allotment
One of the most significant changes involves how vacant berths are handled. Instead of passengers having to search for a Ticket Examiner (TTE) to claim a seat, the new system aims to automate the allotment of vacant berths for RAC and waitlisted passengers. Travelers will receive real-time updates directly on their mobile devices, ensuring they know their seat status without the hassle of manual inquiries.
Smart Jackets and Body Cameras for TTEs
Western Railway has already kicked off trials involving high-tech gear for railway staff. TTEs are being tested with GPS-equipped smart jackets integrated with body cameras. This technology, first reported in Mumbai, serves multiple critical purposes:
- Real-time Tracking: Allows the administration to monitor staff locations accurately.
- Optimized Deployment: Helps in deploying ticket-checking squads more effectively across the train.
- Enhanced Safety: Improves overall workforce management and passenger security.
This initiative is a direct implementation of the RailTech Policy launched in February 2026 by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, which focuses on integrating AI-based systems and sensor technology into the railway network.
New Reservation Chart Rules: Know Your Status Earlier
To improve the flow of information, Indian Railways has updated its protocols for reservation chart preparation. Passengers can now verify the status of their RAC and waiting list tickets up to 10 hours before the scheduled departure. The new timings are structured as follows:
- For trains departing between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM: The initial chart will be prepared by 8:00 PM on the previous day.
- For trains departing between 2:01 PM and 5:00 AM: The chart will be finalized 10 hours prior to the train's departure.
By combining Hand Held Terminals (HHT), GPS-enabled gear, and smart automation, Indian Railways is setting a new standard for passenger convenience and modern railway operations.
