SER Cleans 17,800 Water Tanks for Safer Drinking Water
South Eastern Railway (SER) has significantly accelerated its campaign to enhance the quality and availability of drinking water across its station network. As part of a massive sanitation drive, the railway has successfully cleaned 17,800 water tanks, moving closer to its total target of 24,033 identified storage units.
Massive Scale of the Cleaning Drive
The initiative is not limited to just the tanks. To ensure the water remains pure from the moment it is processed, authorities have also completed the maintenance of all 63 chlorination and filtration plants within the SER jurisdiction. This comprehensive approach aims to provide reliable and safe water for both passengers and railway staff.
The "Tank to Tap" Safety Mandate
This intensive cleaning operation follows a directive from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The move was prompted by a critical report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) released on August 16, 2026, which highlighted concerns regarding water quality, including the detection of E. coli bacteria at several stations.
In response to these findings, the Minister launched the "Tank to Tap" overhaul. This nationwide mission covers approximately 20,000 locations across the Indian Railways network to ensure every station complies with the Uniform Drinking Water Quality Protocol.
