South Western Railway Approves Major Capacity Expansion And Infrastructure Upgrades

The South Western Railway has announced comprehensive plans to boost rail capacity through major expansion projects across key stations alongside crucial infrastructure enhancements at Kanakapura. These developments aim to ease congestion and improve commuter comfort for thousands of daily passengers. Here are the key highlights of the new railway infrastructure initiatives. The Railway Board has approved a Rs 228 crore project to add two new platforms at KSR Bengaluru City station. Furthermore, a massive budget of Rs 331.64 crore has been allocated to construct four new island platforms at Yeshwanthpur station. In addition to these urban hub enhancements, structural improvements are underway at Kanakapura station to develop it into an ideal station. These combined projects represent a total financial investment of Rs 559.64 crore towards regional rail modernization.

Major Platform Expansions in Bengaluru

The persistent congestion at major transit terminals in Bengaluru is set to ease significantly with the latest Railway Board sanctions. At KSR Bengaluru City, the addition of two new platforms will allow for better train handling and smoother passenger movement. Meanwhile, the mega-expansion at Yeshwanthpur featuring four new island platforms is designed to accommodate higher commuter volumes and optimize platform availability for incoming and outgoing trains. These additions are critical for reducing train detention times outside terminals and improving overall punctuality.

Passenger Safety and Kanakapura Upgrades

Beyond the major city hubs, attention is being directed toward smaller stations like Kanakapura to ensure inclusive growth across the network. Platform heights are being increased at Kanakapura to significantly enhance passenger safety and accessibility for senior citizens and differently-abled travellers. These upgrades build upon recent operational milestones, such as a major mega block earlier this year that facilitated the installation of new cross-overs and the extension of dead-end lines. These targeted works form part of a broader, coordinated push to elevate passenger amenities and bolster regional rail connectivity.

Expanding Regional Rail Corridors

The latest station upgrades complement several other transformative rail initiatives in the region. Authorities and local stakeholders continue to advocate for a proposed 142-kilometer rail corridor directly connecting Bengaluru and Kanakapura. Simultaneously, work is actively progressing on the 46.285-kilometer Kanaka corridor under the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. Together, these infrastructure investments mark a decisive step toward transforming public transit, easing road congestion, and delivering a seamless travel experience for commuters across Karnataka.
