Southern Railway completes hundred percent broad gauge network electrification

Southern Railway has officially achieved 100% electrification of its entire 5,068 route-kilometre broad gauge network, marking a massive leap forward for sustainable mobility in India. Passengers and rail enthusiasts will be glad to know that the final remaining segment of 71 RKM between Pattukkottai and Karaikudi successfully completed its statutory inspection on September 9, 2026, conducted by Ganesh, the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of Southern Railway. This major milestone eliminates the need for cumbersome traction changes between diesel and electric locomotives, paving the way for truly seamless travel across the zone. The upgrade will significantly optimize locomotive utilization, boost operational flexibility, and improve overall train punctuality and reliability. By going fully electric, Southern Railway is cutting down on fossil fuel dependence, paving the way for faster trains, and supporting the national goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030 under the Ministry of Railways Mission 100 Percent Electrification initiative.
