Station Master Recruitment: Minimum Age Raised to 20 Years

The Railway Board has officially updated the Station Master recruitment age limit, increasing the minimum age from 18 to 20 years. This decision, which came into effect on October 7, 2026, marks a significant change in the eligibility criteria for one of the railway's most vital operational roles.

Addressing Educational Inconsistencies

The change involves a formal amendment to the Indian Railway Establishment Manual. Previously, the minimum age was set at 18, which created a practical conflict because the position requires a graduation degree—a milestone most candidates achieve by age 20.

Sharad Chandra Purohit, General Secretary of the All India Station Masters Association (AISMA), expressed support for the update. He noted that the previous age requirement was incongruous with the educational standards necessary for the job.

Enhancing Safety and Decision-Making

Railway authorities emphasized that the Station Master role is a sensitive technical position. It requires high levels of proficiency and mental maturity to manage:

  • Safety protocols and emergency decision-making
  • Signaling and panel control operations
  • Complex station management tasks

By raising the minimum age, the Board intends to ensure that recruits are better equipped to handle the high-pressure responsibilities of the role.

Age Limits and Recruitment Continuity

While the minimum age is now 20, the maximum age limit remains 30 years. However, with the standard three-year relaxation applied, the effective age range for general candidates will be 20 to 33 years. Reserved category candidates will continue to receive relaxations as per standard railway rules.

It is important to note that this rule change does not affect all ongoing recruitment processes. Any recruitments already governed by existing Centralized Employment Notifications will continue to follow the previous age criteria. Official instructions have been disseminated to all Zonal Railways, Production Units, and Railway Recruitment Boards, including the North Central Railway.

New Selection and Medical Standards

Future recruitment for Station Masters is expected to be conducted separately from the RRB NTPC process. The selection method will likely consist of:

  1. A single-stage Computer Based Test (CBT)
  2. An aptitude test

Furthermore, all successful candidates must meet the A-2 medical standards to ensure they are physically fit for the technical demands of the position.
