🚨 Stop Littering! Indian Railways Doubles Fine to ₹1,000
The Ministry of Railways has taken a major step toward ensuring cleaner stations and trains across the country. In a significant move to maintain hygiene, the penalty for littering and various other activities that compromise cleanliness on railway premises has been officially doubled.
What Has Changed?
Under the previous regulations, offenders were required to pay a fine of 500 rupees. However, following an amendment to the Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules, 2012, the fine has been increased to 1,000 rupees. This updated penalty structure officially came into force on August 24, 2026.
List of Violations Subject to Fines
The 1,000-rupee penalty is not limited to just dropping trash. It applies to a wide range of actions that affect the cleanliness and decorum of railway property, including:
- Littering and spitting
- Urinating or defecating in public areas
- Defacing property through writing or sticking posters
- Washing clothes or vehicles within the premises
- Cooking or bathing in unauthorized areas
- Feeding animals or birds on railway premises
Who is Enforcing the New Rules?
To ensure these guidelines are strictly followed, several railway officials and departments have been authorized to enforce the penalties. These include:
- Station Masters and Station Managers
- Ticket Collectors from the Commercial Department
- Officers of equivalent rank from the Operating Department
- Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel
Warning: Refusal to Pay Could Lead to Court
Passengers are advised to comply with these rules immediately to avoid legal complications. If an individual refuses to pay the fine on the spot, the matter may be referred to a competent court. In such cases, the penalty could be increased significantly, reaching as much as 2,000 rupees.
Several zones, such as the Mumbai and Ratlam divisions of Western Railway, are already actively implementing and publicizing this mandate. As of mid-September 2026, railway divisions are conducting intensive awareness campaigns to ensure all passengers are fully aware of these updated cleanliness standards.
